Lauren Bacall

A man's illness is his private territory and, no matter how much he loves you and how close you are, you stay an outsider. You are healthy.

A woman isn't complete without a man. But where do you find a man - a real man - these days?

Find me a man who's interesting enough to have dinner with and I'll be happy.

I am essentially a loner.

I am not a has-been. I am a will be.

I don't sit around thinking that I'd like to have another husband; only another man would make me think that way.

I figure if I have my health, can pay the rent and I have my friends, I call it 'content.'

I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that.

I used to tremble from nerves so badly that the only way I could hold my head steady was to lower my chin practically to my chest and look up at Bogie. That was the beginning of The Look.

I wish Frank Sinatra would just shut up and sing.

I'm not a sedentary person. I've always been active.
Imagination is the highest kite one can fly.

In Hollywood, an equitable divorce settlement means each party getting fifty percent of publicity.

Looking at yourself in a mirror isn't exactly a study of life.

They're guys who want to screw around all the time, which interests me not at all. God knows we've done that, been there, and we don't want to do that any more.

When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise.

You can't start worrying about what's going to happen. You get spastic enough worrying about what's happening now.

As a lawyer, as a private citizen, you see a lot of injustice.

But if I worried too much about publishers' expectations, I'd probably paralyze myself and not be able to write anything.

But protagonists are protagonists and heroes are heroes.

Fiction is sort of a way to set the record straight, and let people at least believe that justice can be achieved and the right outcomes can occur.

I look for material that both interest me and challenges me. If I am drawn to the material and I have to work hard at it, the characters and the plots reflect the hours and hours of research.

I'd read a lot of thrillers about politicians and presidents, but never one where you flip the stereotypes and make good people bad and bad people good.

I'm driven to go out and find new things to write about.

I'm ever curious about the world. I'm driven to go out and find new things to write about. Having a vivid imagination is also a plus.

I'm scattered, and then that last hundred pages, bam, I'm a laser.

I'm tired of people screaming about price and forgetting about the content.

In every thriller written about Washington, particularly after 9/11, there are good guys and there are bad guys, and there's no gray area at all.

Most people associate reading with laying on the beach. They don't see that it's crucial for a democracy!

People have given me classified information, but always with the disclaimer 'This can never end up in a book.' And it never does.

People who have expertise just love to share it. That's human nature.

Some people take 10 years to write a book and some can do one in under a year.

The military is a very cool world to write about. I went down to Ft. Benning, Ga., for military training, and I learned a lot about soldiers and officers and why they joined up and what their life has been like.

Why waste time trying to discover the truth, when you can so easily create it?

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

A feeble body weakens the mind.

Absolute silence leads to sadness. It is the image of death.

All of my misfortunes come from having thought too well of my fellows.

Although modesty is natural to man, it is not natural to children. Modesty only begins with the knowledge of evil.

Base souls have no faith in great individuals.

Childhood is the sleep of reason.

Do I dare set forth here the most important, the most useful rule of all education? It is not to save time, but to squander it.

Every man has a right to risk his own life for the preservation of it.

Every man has the right to risk his own life in order to preserve it. Has it ever been said that a man who throws himself out the window to escape from a fire is guilty of suicide?

Falsehood has an infinity of combinations, but truth has only one mode of being.
Fame is but the breath of people, and that often unwholesome.

Force does not constitute right... obedience is due only to legitimate powers.

Free people, remember this maxim: we may acquire liberty, but it is never recovered if it is once lost.

Gratitude is a duty which ought to be paid, but which none have a right to expect.

Happiness: a good bank account, a good cook, and a good digestion.

Heroes are not known by the loftiness of their carriage; the greatest braggarts are generally the merest cowards.

How many famous and high-spirited heroes have lived a day too long?

However great a man's natural talent may be, the act of writing cannot be learned all at once.

I hate books; they only teach us to talk about things we know nothing about.

Wilfred Owen

A Poem does not grow by jerks. As trees in Spring produce a new ring of tissue, so does every poet put forth a fresh outlay of stuff at the same season.

After all my years of playing soldiers, and then of reading History, I have almost a mania to be in the East, to see fighting, and to serve.

All a poet can do today is warn.

All I ask is to be held above the barren wastes of want.

All theological lore is becoming distasteful to me.

Ambition may be defined as the willingness to receive any number of hits on the nose.

Be bullied, be outraged, by killed, but do not kill.

Do you know what would hold me together on a battlefield? The sense that I was perpetuating the language in which Keats and the rest of them wrote!

Flying is the only active profession I would ever continue with enthusiasm after the War.

I am only conscious of any satisfaction in Scientific Reading or thinking when it rounds off into a poetical generality and vagueness.

I don't ask myself, is the life congenial to me? But, am I fitted for, am I called to, the Ministry?

I find purer philosophy in a Poem than in a Conclusion of Geometry, a chemical analysis, or a physical law.

I was a boy when I first realized that the fullest life liveable was a Poet's.

If I have got to be a soldier, I must be a good one, anything else is unthinkable.

My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.

Never fear: Thank Home, and Poetry, and the Force behind both.

Numbers of the old people cannot read. Those who can seldom do.

She is elegant rather than belle.

The English say, Yours Truly, and mean it. The Italians say, I kiss your feet, and mean, I kick your head.

The war effects me less than it ought. I can do no service to anybody by agitating for news or making dole over the slaughter.

Martin Heidegger

As the ego cogito, subjectivity is the consciousness that represents something, relates this representation back to itself, and so gathers with itself.

Being and time determine each other reciprocally, but in such a manner that neither can the former - Being - be addressed as something temporal nor can the latter - time - be addressed as a being.

But every historical statement and legitimization itself moves within a certain relation to history.

Every man is born as many men and dies as a single one.

If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself.

Language is the house of the truth of Being.

Making itself intelligible is suicide for philosophy.

Man acts as though he were the shaper and master of language, while in fact language remains the master of man.

Man is not the lord of beings. Man is the shepherd of Being.

The German language speaks Being, while all the others merely speak of Being.

The human being is not the lord of beings, but the shepherd of Being.

The human body is essentially something other than an animal organism.

The most thought-provoking thing in our thought-provoking time is that we are still not thinking.

The possible ranks higher than the actual.

Thinking begins only when we have come to know that reason, glorified for centuries, is the stiff-necked adversary of thought.

Time is not a thing, thus nothing which is, and yet it remains constant in its passing away without being something temporal like the beings in time.

Time-space as commonly understood, in the sense of the distance measured between two time-points, is the result of time calculation.

Robert Mapplethorpe

Beauty and the devil are the same thing.

Happiness? No, it's not there for me.

I always thought I was good. That's why it was so frustrating when other people didn't agree.

I am obsessed with beauty. I want everything to be perfect, and of course it isn't. And that's a tough place to be because you're never satisfied.

I am selfish, but that's an attribute that all artists possess.

I became the toast of London. A lot of people I met came from these really decadent families where the married men were gay and no one thought anything about it.

I can't have just anybody assisting me, I need somebody who I can really communicate with.

I don't believe in dogmas and theologies. I just believe in being a good person.

I don't know why my pictures come out looking so good. I just don't get it.

I don't think any collector knows his true motivation.

I just hope I can live long enough to see the fame.

I just try to live my life and do my thing.

I just want to be written about as a normal artist.

I played around with the flowers and the lighting, so that was a good way to educate myself.

I recorded that because it happened to me. I wasn't making a point.

I see things like they've never been seen before. Art is an accurate statement of the time in which it is made.

I should try to get some sleep as one doesn't know what tomorrow may bring.

I went into photography because it seemed like the perfect vehicle for commenting on the madness of today's existence.

I wish I could be elegant.

I would never have done what I'd done if I'd considered my father as somebody I wanted to please.

Jack Kerouac

A pain stabbed my heart as it did every time I saw a girl I loved who was going the

opposite direction in this too-big world.

Accept loss forever.

All human beings are also dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together.

All of life is a foreign country.

All our best men are laughed at in this nightmare land.

Avoid the world, it's just a lot of dust and drag and means nothing in the end.

Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.

I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.

I hope it is true that a man can die and yet not only live in others but give them life, and not only life, but that great consciousness of life.

If moderation is a fault, then indifference is a crime.

It is not my fault that certain so-called bohemian elements have found in my writings something to hang their peculiar beatnik theories on.

Mankind is like dogs, not gods - as long as you don't get mad they'll bite you - but stay mad and you'll never be bitten. Dogs don't respect humility and sorrow.

Maybe that's what life is... a wink of the eye and winking stars.

My fault, my failure, is not in the passions I have, but in my lack of control of them.

My witness is the empty sky.

Offer them what they secretly want and they of course immediately become panic-stricken.

Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.

Whither goest thou, America, in thy shiny car in the night?

Write in recollection and amazement for yourself.

You can't teach the old maestro a new tune.

Marilyn Monroe

A career is wonderful, but you can't curl up with it on a cold night.

A sex symbol becomes a thing. I just hate to be a thing.

An actress is not a machine, but they treat you like a machine. A money machine.

Before marriage, a girl has to make love to a man to hold him. After marriage, she has to hold him to make love to him.

Being a sex symbol is a heavy load to carry, especially when one is tired, hurt and bewildered.

Dogs never bite me. Just humans.

Dreaming about being an actress, is more exciting then being one.

Fame will go by and, so long, I've had you, fame. If it goes by, I've always known it was fickle. So at least it's something I experience, but that's not where I live.

First, I'm trying to prove to myself that I'm a person. Then maybe I'll convince myself that I'm an actress.

Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.

Husbands are chiefly good as lovers when they are betraying their wives.

I am invariably late for appointments - sometimes as much as two hours. I've tried to change my ways but the things that make me late are too strong, and too pleasing.

I am involved in a freedom ride protesting the loss of the minority rights belonging to the few remaining earthbound stars. All we demanded was our right to twinkle.

I don't know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot.

I don't mind living in a man's world as long as I can be a woman in it.

I don't mind making jokes, but I don't want to look like one.

I don't want to make money, I just want to be wonderful.

I guess I have always been deeply terrified to really be someone's wife since I know from life one cannot love another, ever, really.

I have feelings too. I am still human. All I want is to be loved, for myself and for my talent.

I have too many fantasies to be a housewife. I guess I am a fantasy.

Henry Ford

A bore is a person who opens his mouth and puts his feats in it.

A business absolutely devoted to service will have only one worry about profits. They will be embarrassingly large.

A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.

A market is never saturated with a good product, but it is very quickly saturated with a bad one.

An idealist is a person who helps other people to be prosperous.

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.

As we advance in life we learn the limits of our abilities.

Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success.

Business is never so healthy as when, like a chicken, it must do a certain amount of scratching around for what it gets.

Capital punishment is as fundamentally wrong as a cure for crime as charity is wrong as a cure for poverty.

Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

Competition is the keen cutting edge of business, always shaving away at costs.

Don't find fault, find a remedy.

Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes shine to the stars.

Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas.

Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement.

Exercise is bunk. If you are healthy, you don't need it: if you are sick you should not take it.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

History is more or less bunk.

I am looking for a lot of men who have an infinite capacity to not know what can't be done.

Hippocrates

A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his own thought to derive benefit from his illnesses.

Cure sometimes, treat often, comfort always.

Everything in excess is opposed to nature.

Extreme remedies are very appropriate for extreme diseases.

Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.

If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.

It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.

It's far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has.

Keep a watch also on the faults of the patients, which often make them lie about the taking of things prescribed.

Life is short, the art long.

Make a habit of two things: to help; or at least to do no harm.

Many admire, few know.

Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.

Prayer indeed is good, but while calling on the gods a man should himself lend a hand.

Science is the father of knowledge, but opinion breeds ignorance.

The art is long, life is short.

The chief virtue that language can have is clearness, and nothing detracts from it so much as the use of unfamiliar words.

The life so short, the craft so long to learn.

There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the later ignorance.
