Timothy Keller

To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.

It is not the strength of your faith but the object of your faith that actually saves you.

If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead.

Believers should acknowledge and wrestle with doubts... It is no longer sufficient to hold beliefs just because you inherited them.

Tolerance isn't about not having beliefs. It's about how your beliefs lead you to treat people who disagree with you.

God will only give you what you would have asked for if you knew everything he knows.

The basic premise of religion– that if you live a good life, things will go well for you– is wrong. Jesus was the most morally upright person who ever lived, yet He had a life filled with the experience of poverty, rejection, injustice, and even torture.

When you listen and read one thinker, you become a clone… two thinkers, you become confused… ten thinkers, you’ll begin developing your own voice… two or three hundred thinkers, you become wise and develop your voice.

Reason can get you to probability, but only commitment can get you to certainty.

Fear-based repentance makes us hate ourselves. Joy-based repentance makes us hate the sin.

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.

Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.

We must have perserverence and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something.

You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for our own improvement and, at the same time, share a genaral responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think can be most useful.

Scientists believe in things, not in person.

A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales.

I am one of those who think, like Nobel, that humanity will draw more good than evil from new discoveries.

We must not forget that when radium was discovered no one knew that it would prove useful in hospitals. The work was one of pure science. And this is a proof that scientific work must not be considered from the point of view of the direct usefulness of it. It must be done for itself, for the beauty of science, and then there is always the chance that a scientific discovery may become like the radium a benefit for mankind.

“You’re dangerous,” he says.
“Why?”
“Because you make me believe in the impossible”

You are the one girl that made me risk eveything for a future worth having.

We're actors in our lives, pretendin' to be who we want people to think we are.

“I want to know how to make this girl laugh. I want to know what makes her cry. I want to know what it feels like to have her look at me as if I’m her knight in shinning armor.

Fifty percent of all doctors graduate in the bottom half of their class - Hope your surgery went well!

One of the things that makes me who I am is the loyalty I have to people I hold close to my heart.

If there's one thing I learned, it's that nobody is here forever. You have to live for the moment, each and every day . . . the here, the now.

But wishes are only granted in fairy tales.

I want to tell her how much she's become the center of my being. But I can't. The words won't come.

Expectations make people miserable, so whatever yours are, lower them. You'll definitely be happier.

Love is honesty. Love is a mutual respect for one another.

It’s my future and my life and I can’t make myself live the way someone else wants me to.

Pain is pain, babe. Just because one person's problem is less traumatic than another's doesn't mean they're required to hurt less.

Heart always wins out over the mind. The heart, although reckless and suicidal and a masochist all on its own, always gets its way.

I think that if past lives are real then we have been lovers in every single one of them. I've known you for a short time, but I feel like I've known you forever.

I hate to say it, but shit really does happen. You just have to get over it. Beat the hell out of it by doing things that make you happy.

You were the missing piece of my soul, the breath in my lungs, and the blood in my veins.

Coincidence is just the conformist term for fate.

I think when you fall in love, like true love, it’s love for life. All the rest is just experiences and delusions.

Everybody starts out as strangers.

Just remember to always be yourself and don’t be afraid to speak your mind or to dream out loud.

You two were meant to be together. It's like some wicked fucking fairytale love story that you just can't make up, y'know?

Cram your head with characters and stories. Abuse your library privileges. Never stop looking at the world, and never stop reading to find out what sense other people have made of it. If people give you a hard time and tell you to get your nose out of a book, tell them you're working. Tell them it's research. Tell them to pipe down and leave you alone.

If you wish for something hard enough, the fairy tales teach us, you can get it in the end. But it's hardly ever the way you thought it would be, and the endings aren't always happy ones.”

This is motherhood for you,' said my own mother. 'Going through life with your heart outside your body.

Tell the story that's been growing in your heart, the characters you can't keep out of your head, the tale story that speaks to you, that pops into your head during your daily commute, that wakes you up in the morning.

“I don't trust happiness. I turn it over as if it were a glass at a flea market or a rug at a souk, looking for chipped rims or loose threads

Everyone has sorrow. Everyone has obligations. Everyone keeps going. You lean on the people who love you. You do the best you can, and you keep going.

You should be concerned about the state of your soul, not the state of your bank account.

People will want you to behave a certain way, to make a certain choice because it reinforces the way they see the world...But you have to do what's right for you.

As your lover describes you, so you are.

What you risk reveals what you value.

I have a theory that every time you make an important choice, the part of you left behind continues the other life you could have had.

The body shuts down when it has too much to bear; goes its own way quietly inside, waiting for a better time, leaving you numb and half alive.

The Buddhists say there are 149 ways to God. I'm not looking for God, only for myself, and that is far more complicated. God has had a great deal written about Him; nothing has been written about me. God is bigger, like my mother, easier to find, even in the dark. I could be anywhere, and since I can't describe myself I can't ask for help.

I want someone who is fierce and will love me until death and knows that love is as strong as death, and be on my side forever and ever. I want someone who will destroy and be destroyed by me.

When I look at my life I realise that the mistakes I have made, the things I really regret, were not errors of judgement but failures of feeling.

To be ill adjusted to a deranged world is not a breakdown.

Time that withers you will wither me. We will fall like ripe fruit and roll down the grass together. Dear friend, let me lie beside you watching the clouds until the earth covers us and we are gone.

I was in the biggest breakdown of my life when I stopped crying long enough to let the words of my epiphany really sink in. That whore, karma, had finally made her way around, and had just bitch-slapped me right across the face. The realization only made me cry harder.

When you're missing a peice of yourself, aching, gut wrenching emptiness begins to take over. Until you find the link that completes your very soul, the feeling will never go away. Most people find a way to fill this void, material possessions, a string of relationships, affairs, food...I bear my soul, with words, for all to see.

“The eyes are one of the most powerful tools a woman can have. With one look, she can relay the most intimate message. After the connection is made, words cease to exist.

How 'bout a shot of truth in that denial cocktail.

To have the beginning of a truly great story, you need to have a character you're completely and utterly obsessed with. Without obsession, to the point of a maddening addiction, there's no point to continue.

It's just not as hot without biting, scratching, and spanking, involved.

Longing, whether for a passion or person, is one of the most powerful, yet painful, emotions there is. It can drive you to its source under the most extreme conditions, or it can cripple you from obtaining your dreams. When it comes to the pull you feel, always go after it, if not, it'll eat you alive.

Alan Moore II

My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres; it’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you're lucky

People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.

Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.

Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.

Artists use lies to tell the truth. Yes, I created a lie. But because you believed it, you found something true about yourself.

You wear a mask for so long, you forget who you were beneath it.

The past can't hurt you anymore. Not unless you let it. They made you into a victim, Evey. They made you into a statistic. But, that's not the real you. That's not who you are inside

Knowledge, like air, is vital to life. Like air, no one should be denied it.

God is in the rain.

All we ever see of stars are their old photographs.

They say that life's a game, and then they take the board away.

It seems strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years I had roses, and apologized to no one.

Umberto Eco II

We live for books.

People are never so completely and enthusiastically evil as when they act out of religious conviction.

I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren't trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.

I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

When men stop believing in God, it isn't that they then believe in nothing: they believe in everything.

Absence is to love as wind is to fire: it extinguishes the little flame, it fans the big.

What is love? There is nothing in the world, neither man nor Devil nor any thing, that I hold as suspect as love, for it penetrates the soul more than any other thing. Nothing exists that so fills and binds the heart as love does. Therefore, unless you have those weapons that subdue it, the soul plunges through love into an immense abyss

Love is wiser than wisdom.

Daytime sleep is like the sin of the flesh; the more you have the more you want, and yet you feel unhappy, sated and unsated at the same time.

Nothing gives a fearful man more courage than another's fear.

Where else? I belong to a lost generation and am comfortable only in the company of others who are lost and lonely.

Monsters exist because they are part of the divine plan, and in the horrible features of those same monsters the power of the creator is revealed

Leon Trotsky

The end may justify the means as long as there is something that justifies the end.

Everything is relative in this world, where change alone endures.

Life is not an easy matter…. You cannot live through it without falling into frustration and cynicism unless you have before you a great idea which raises you above personal misery, above weakness, above all kinds of perfidy and baseness.

Tell me anyway--Maybe I can find the truth by comparing the lies.

You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.

As long as human labor power, and, consequently, life itself, remain articles of sale and purchase, of exploitation and robbery, the principle of the “sacredness of human life” remains a shameful lie, uttered with the object of keeping the oppressed slaves in their chains.

Abusive language and swearing are a legacy of slavery, humiliation, and disrespect for human dignity, one’s own and that of other people.

Our planet is being turned into a filthy and evil-smelling imperialist barrack.

Old age is the most unexpected of all things that can happen to a man.

‎The party that leans upon the workers but serves the bourgeoisie, in the period of the greatest sharpening of the class struggle, cannot but sense the smells wafted from the waiting grave.
