Karl Lagerfeld

What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.

Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you sacrifice too much there’s nothing else you can give and nobody will care for you.

Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.

We live in a dark and romantic and quite tragic world.

One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.

A respectable appearance is sufficient to make people more interested in your soul.

People who do a job that claims to be creative have to be alone to recharge their batteries. You can’t live 24 hours a day in the spotlight and remain creative. For people like me, solitude is a victory.

Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.

People who say that yesterday was better than today are ultimately devaluing their own existence.

I love classic beauty. It’s an idea of beauty with no standard.

“I’m very much down to earth, just not this earth.

I am a fashion person, and fashion is not only about clothes -- it's about all kinds of change.

Music gives color to the air of the moment.

The secret to modeling is not being perfect. What one needs is a face that people can identify in a second. You have to be given what’s needed by nature, and what’s needed is to bring something new.

J. D. Salinger II

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.

Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You'll learn from them—if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry.

I am always saying "Glad to've met you" to somebody I'm not at all glad I met. If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though.

I'm sick of not having the courage to be an absolute nobody.

That's the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if they're not much to look at, or even if they're sort of stupid, you fall in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are. Girls. Jesus Christ. They can drive you crazy. They really can.

It's funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they'll do practically anything you want them to.

I don't exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it.

I’m just sick of ego, ego, ego. My own and everybody else’s. I’m sick of everybody that wants to get somewhere, do something distinguished and all, be somebody interesting. It’s disgusting.

Barbara Kingsolver

The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.

Don’t try to make life a mathematics problem with yourself in the center and everything coming out equal. When you’re good, bad things can still happen. And if you’re bad, you can still be lucky.

The friend who holds your hand and says the wrong thing is made of dearer stuff than the one who stays away.

There is no point treating a depressed person as though she were just feeling sad, saying, 'There now, hang on, you'll get over it.' Sadness is more or less like a head cold- with patience, it passes. Depression is like cancer.

Listen. Slide the weight from your shoulders and move forward. You are afraid you might forget, but you never will. You will forgive and remember.

Everything you're sure is right can be wrong in another place.

God doesn’t need to punish us. He just grants us a long enough life to punish ourselves.

Close the door. Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say. It's the one and only thing you have to offer.

If you're reading this...
Congratulations, you're alive.
If that's not something to smile about,
then I don't know what is.

Love the trees until their leaves fall off, then encourage them to try again next year.

Enjoy your youth.
You'll never be younger than
you are at this very moment.

Something amazing happens when you're in love and don't give a damn about what day it is anymore.

And like a colorful bloom of temporary lights in the sky, you will shine.

Love is a good thing on a bad day, when the last thing you want is to be cheered up.

Come tomorrow, I'll wake up new.

My body is an ugly masterpiece that lives off the beauty of sound.

John Milton II

The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven. . .

Better to reign in Hell, than to serve in Heaven.

Solitude sometimes is best society.

What hath night to do with sleep?

Farewell Hope, and with Hope farewell Fear.

All is not lost, the unconquerable will, and study of revenge, immortal hate, and the courage never to submit or yield.

Innocence, Once Lost, Can Never Be Regained. Darkness, Once Gazed Upon, Can Never Be Lost.

How soon hath Time, the subtle thief of youth, Stol'n on his wing my three-and-twentieth year!

Awake, arise or be for ever fall’n.

The stars, that nature hung in heaven, and filled their lamps with everlasting oil, give due light to the misled and lonely traveler.

For books are not absolutely dead things, but do contain a potency of life in them to be as active as that soul was whose progeny they are; nay, they do preserve as in a vial the purest efficacy and extraction of that living intellect that bred them.

Remember: the time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself. Life's cruelest irony.

I don't deserve a soul, yet I still have one. I know because it hurts.

I don't think anyone ever gets over anything in life; they merely get used to it.

TV and the Internet are good because they keep stupid people from spending too much time out in public.

We are all of us born with a letter inside us, and that only if we are true to ourselves, may we be allowed to read it before we die.

When you're young, you always feel that life hasn't yet begun—that "life" is always scheduled to begin next week, next month, next year, after the holidays—whenever. But then suddenly you're old and the scheduled life didn't arrive. You find yourself asking, 'Well then, exactly what was it I was having—that interlude—the scrambly madness—all that time I had before?

In the end, I think the relationships that survive in this world are the ones where two people can finish each other's sentences. Forget drama and torrid sex and the clash of opposites. Give me banter any day of the week.

Time ticks by; we grow older. Before we know it, too much time has passed and we've missed the chance to have had other people hurt us. To a younger me this sounded like luck; to an older me this sounds like a quiet tragedy.

Here's my theory about meetings and life: the three things you can't fake are erections, competence and creativity.

All families are psychotic. Everybody has basically the same family - it's just reconfigured slightly different from one to the next.

Life is boring. People are vengeful. Good things always end. We do so many things and we don’t know why, and if we do find out why, it’s decades later and knowing why doesn’t matter any more.

Henry Miller II

The one thing we can never get enough of is love. And the one thing we never give enough of is love.

A book lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition.

The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.

Develop an interest in life as you see it; the people, things, literature, music - the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself.

Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate, or despise, serves to defeat us in the end

Everybody says sex is obscene. The only true obscenity is war.

Serenity is when you get above all this, when it doesn't matter what they think, say or want, but when you do as you are, and see God and Devil as one.

Destiny is what you are supposed to do in life. Fate is what kicks you in the ass to make you do it.

One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.

What holds the world together, as I have learned from bitter experience, is sexual intercourse.

Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.

I hate this feeling. Like I'm here, but I'm not. Like someone cares. But they don't. Like I belong somewhere else, anywhere but here, and escape lies just past that snowy window, cool and crisp as the February air.

Love means holding on to someone just as hard as you can because if you don't, one blink and they might disappear...forever.

Taking no chances means wasting your dreams.

Forever has no meaning when you're living in the moment. I wasn't ready for that moment to end.

This time when we kiss, I feel it in the pit of my stomach, I feel it in my heart. And I realize love isn't about sex. It's about connection.

Have you ever once in your life reached out to touch infinity.

Grandma once told me it's easy to overthink love, to dissect it and question it until it is no more.

Wish you could turn off the questions, turn off the voices, turn off all sound.
Yearn to close out the ugliness, close out the filthiness, close out all light.
Long to cast away yesterday, cast away memory, cast away all jeapordy.
Pray you could somehow stop uncertainty, somehow stop the loathing, somehow stop the pain.

Life is all about change. If it were static, think about how boring it would be. You can't be afraid of it, and you can't worry that you'll mess things up. You deserve good things, and I want to be one of them.

One foot in front of the other, counting tiles on the floor so I don't have to focus the blur of painted smiles, fake faces.

Funny how when your life is mostly bullshit, you turn off feeling. Sometimes it's hard to turn it back on again.

MS. THOMPSON, it said in heavy block letters, PLEASE KEEP YOUR FELINE OFF MY PROPERTY. IF I SEE IT AGAIN, I WILL EAT IT.

I don't like it when I outweigh my men.

Women are the bloodthirsty sex," said Ric sadly. "We get the reputation, but it is only because the women stand behind us, and say, 'Kill it. Squish it.

Why is it that all cars are women?" he asked. "Because they're fussy and demanding," answered Zee.
"Because if they were men, they'd sit around and complain instead of getting the job done," I told him.

Love thy enemies, it says in the scriptures. My foster mother always added, "At the very least, you will be polite to them.

One of the oddest things about being grown-up was looking back at something you thought you knew and finding out the truth of it was completely different from what you had always believed.

Anger is stupid, and stupidity will kill you more surely than your opponent's blade.

Some people are boys longer than others.

Civilization is vastly overrated.

Hard truths can be dealt with, triumphed over, but lies will destroy your soul.

Fear makes idiots out of us all, at some time or other.

You’re not obligated to win. You’re obligated to keep trying. To the best you can do everyday.

Transformation is my favorite game and in my experience, anger and frustration are the result of you not being authentic somewhere in your life or with someone in your life. Being fake about anything creates a block inside of you. Life can’t work for you if you don’t show up as you.

It’s strange how dreams get under your skin and give your heart a test for what’s real and what’s imaginary.

Frustration and Love can’t exist in the same place at the same time, so get real and start doing what you would rather be doing in life. Love your life. All of it. Even the heavy shit that happened to you when you were 8. All of it was and IS perfect.

Here’s to freedom, cheers to art. Here’s to having an excellent adventure and may the stopping never start.

You can turn off the sun, but I'm still gonna shine.

Everything is perfect.
Everything is fine.
The rules of life are made up.
The rules only exist in your mind.
Of course there may be courtesies
And closures and laws to abide,
But the zeal with which you play
Relies on where YOU draw the line

Music is the weapon in the war against unhappiness.
