Romain Rolland

Be reverent before the dawning day. Do not think of what will be in a year, or in ten years. Think of today.

If a man is to shed the light of the sun upon other men, he must first of all have it within himself.

Discussion is impossible with someone who claims not to seek the truth, but already to possess it.

To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.

To understand everything is to hate nothing.

One makes mistakes; that is life.
But it is never a mistake to have loved.

No one ever reads a book. He reads himself through books, either to discover or to control himself.

The greatest book is not the one whose message engraves itself on the brain, as a telegraphic message engraves itself on the ticker-tape, but the one whose vital impact opens up other viewpoints, and from writer to reader spreads the fire that is fed by the various essences, until it becomes a vast conflagration leaping from forest to forest.

Stanley Kubrick II

I think the big mistake in schools is trying to teach children anything, and by using fear as the basic motivation. Fear of getting failing grades, fear of not staying with your class, etc. Interest can produce learning on a scale compared to fear as a nuclear explosion to a firecracker.

The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent, but if we can come to terms with this indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.

The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism – and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him, and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man.

I do not always know what I want, but I do know what I don't want.

If man merely sat back and thought about his impending termination, and his terrifying insignificance and aloneness in the cosmos, he would surely go mad, or succumb to a numbing sense of futility. Why, he might ask himself, should he bother to write a great symphony, or strive to make a living, or even to love another, when he is no more than a momentary microbe on a dust mote whirling through the unimaginable immensity of space? Those of us who are forced by their own sensibilities to view their lives in this perspective — who recognize that there is no purpose they can comprehend and that amidst a countless myriad of stars their existence goes unknown and unchronicled — can fall prey all too easily to the ultimate anomie. The world's religions, for all their parochialism, did supply a kind of consolation for this great ache.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.

Don't wish it were easier. Wish you were better.

If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse.

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.

The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.

We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.

Let others lead small lives, but not you. . . Let others argue over small things, but not you. . . Let others cry over small hurts, but not you. . . Let others leave their future in someone else's hands, but not you.

Don't wish it was easier wish you were better. Don't wish for less problems wish for more skills. Don't wish for less challenge wish for more wisdom.

The worst thing one can do is not to try, to be aware of what one wants and not give in to it, to spend years in silent hurt wondering if something could have materialized - never knowing.

She wasn't a person to whom things happen. She did all the happenings.

To me education is a leading out of what is already there in the pupil's soul.

Allow me, in conclusion, to congratulate you warmly upon your sexual intercourse, as well as your singing.

The word "education" comes from the root e from ex, out, and duco, I lead. It means a leading out. To me education is a leading out of what is already there in the pupil's soul.

For those who like that sort of thing," said Miss Brodie in her best Edinburgh voice, "That is the sort of thing they like."

It is well, when in difficulties, to say never a word, neither black nor white. Speech is silver but silence is golden.

If you want to concentrate deeply on some problem, and especially some piece of writing or paper-work, you should acquire a cat. Alone with the cat in the room where you work ... the cat will invariably get up on your desk and settle placidly under the desk lamp ... The cat will settle down and be serene, with a serenity that passes all understanding. And the tranquility of the cat will gradually come to affect you, sitting there at your desk, so that all the excitable qualities that impede your concentration compose themselves and give your mind back the self-command it has lost. You need not watch the cat all the time. Its presence alone is enough. The effect of a cat on your concentration is remarkable, very mysterious.

My only regrets are the moments when I doubted myself and took the safe route. Life is too short to waste time being unhappy.

Don't trust people who tell you other people's secrets.

I'm the living embodiment of 'it could be worse'.

You are a human with one life and its up to you to make it the best life you can.

You know, people ask me. They say 'Dan, three years later do you really want to be drawing cat whiskers on your face?' but they don't understand. The cat whiskers, they come from within.

I'm about as intimidating as a butterfly

Unless you have great parents or some inspirational teacher from a movie that pushes you to follow your dreams, you can't expect a kid to be smart enough to realize they can do what they want with their life before they've been pushed through the school system into having an average life.

It's so important to know you should be happy and proud of who you are.

Making love to me is amazing. Wait, I meant: making love, to me, is amazing. The absence of two little commas nearly transformed me into a sex god.

If you have the woman you love, what more do you need? Well, besides an alibi for the time of her husband’s murder.

To find out if she really loved me, I hooked her up to a lie detector. And just as I suspected, my machine was broken.

I make love with a focus and intensity that most people reserve for sleep.

I love being in love, but I also love other things, like not being jealous, overly sensitive, or needy.

Our love was a two-person game. At least until one of us died, and the other became a murderer.

If I could bronze my love, it’d be worthy of a silver medal.

If you have to speculate if someone loves you and wants to be with you, chances are they don't. It's not that complicated. Love, in most cases, betrays the one feeling it. Don't waste moments waiting and wondering. Don't throw away your time dreaming of someone that doesn't want you. No one is that amazing, certainly not the one who would pass you up.

It's effortless to let go of self-absorbed people. It's challenging to let go of someone you care about and it's exceedingly difficult to let go of an ideal and a belief in someone because what exacerbates the disappointment of finding out they weren't who they presented themselves to be, is the betrayal of it.

I don't cry because we've been separated by distance, and for a matter of years. Why? Because for as long as we share the same sky and breathe the same air, we're still together.

Why do you think you deserve happily ever after? You were offered it before and tossed it away.

The most beautiful women I have known had one thing in common apart from beauty: humility. It's a shame that those with less to boast about do it the most.

Sometimes you grow to love the shadow that follows.

Biology gives you a brain. Life turns it into a mind.

It was one of those humid days when the atmosphere gets confused. Sitting on the porch, you could feel it: the air wishing it was water.

She held herself very straight, like Audrey Hepburn, whom all women idolize and men never think about.

Basically what we have here is a dreamer. Somebody out of touch with reality. When she jumped, she probably thought she'd fly.

In the end, it wasn't death that surprised her but the stubbornness of life.

Emotions, in my experience, aren't covered by single words. I don't believe in "sadness," "joy," or "regret." Maybe the best proof that the language is patriarchal is that it oversimplifies feeling. I'd like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions, Germanic train-car constructions like, say, "the happiness that attends disaster." Or: "the disappointment of sleeping with one's fantasy." I'd like to show how "intimations of mortality brought on by aging family members" connects with "the hatred of mirrors that begins in middle age." I'd like to have a word for "the sadness inspired by failing restaurants" as well as for "the excitement of getting a room with a minibar." I've never had the right words to describe my life, and now that I've entered my story, I need them more than ever.

He's not your prince charming if he doesn't make sure you know that you're his princess.

I can't set my hopes too high,
Cause every hello ends with a goodbye

One of the most scariest thing in life is when you come to the realization that the only thing that can save you is...yourself.

Love is louder then the pressure to be perfect.

If I decided I'm the girl to change the world, I can do it anytime.

The mirror can lie.
Doesn't show you what's inside.
And it, it can tell you you're full of life.
It's amazing what you can hide just by putting on a smile.

An impact is like a punch it may hurt put it passes.

Be grateful for what you have now. As you begin to think about all the things in your life you are grateful for, you will be amazed at the never ending thoughts that come back to you of more things to be grateful for. You have to make a start, and then the law of attraction will receive those grateful thoughts and give you more just like them.

There is no such thing as a hopeless situation. Every single circumstances of your life can change!

There is a truth deep down inside of you that has been waiting for you to discover it, and that truth is this: you deserve all good things life has to offer.

You become what you think about most.. But you also attract what you think about most.

Your power is in your thoughts, so stay awake. In other words, remember to remember

Your thoughts become things!

The truth is that the universe has been answering you all of your life, but you cannot receive the answers unless you are awake.
