But God doesn't call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn't come through.

Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don't really matter.

The irony is that while God doesn’t need us but still wants us, we desperately need God but don’t really want Him most of the time.

God's definition of what matters is pretty straightforward. He measures our lives by how we love.

Lukewarm people don't really want to be saved from their sin; they want only to be saved from the penalty of their sin.

We need to stop giving people excuses not to believe in God. You've probably heard the expression 'I believe in God, just not organized religion'. I don't think people would say that if the church truly lived like we are called to live.

Something is wrong when our lives make sense to unbelievers.

Christians are like manure: spread them out and they help everything grow better, but keep them in one big pile and they stink horribly.

I didn't fall in love with you. I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way. I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose anyway. And I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you.

Lish tried to swear--which is always funny, because the computer won't translate it. It went something like this: "Bleep stupid bleep bleep faeries and their bleep bleep bleep obsessions. He had better stop bleep bleep bleep the bleep bleep rules or I will bleep bleep bleep the little bleeeeeeeeeeep.

Tasers are a one-size-fits-all paranormal butt-kicking option. Mine’s pink with rhinestones.

I get that you're scared and that you've been hurt. But doing what is easy and safe is no way to live, and a life without passion and love is so far beneath what you deserve.

If you fail to report within the next 12 hours. you will be terminated. If you attack any humans, you will be terminated. If you attempt to remove the tracking device, you will be terminated. We look forward to working with you.

You can obsess and obsess over how things ended—what you did wrong or could have done differently—but there's not much of a point. It's not like it'll change anything. So really, why worry?

The trouble is, sometimes words are like arrows. Once you shoot them, there's no going back.

I was falling. Falling through time and space and stars and sky and everything in between. I fell for days and weeks and what felt like lifetime across lifetimes. I fell until I forgot I was falling.

War is sweet to those who have never fought.

My heart didn't fail, someone failed my heart.

No matter how much you think you know a person—no matter how pretty they act, or how popular they seem, you can never know what their lives are really like.

Turns out, hell's not so much a burning, scalding pit of fire and misery. It's actually much, much worse than that. Hell is when the people you love the most reach right into your soul and rip it out of you. And they do it because they can.

One day you will kiss a man you can't breathe without, and find that breath is of little consequence.

The most confused we ever get is when we're trying to convince our heads of something our heart knows is a lie.

I love books, by the way, way more than movies. Movies tell you what to think. A good book lets you choose a few thoughts for yourself. Movies show you the pink house. A good book tells you there's a pink house and lets you paint some of the finishing touches, maybe choose the roof style, park your own car out front. My imagination has always topped anything a movie could come up with. Case in point, those darned Harry Potter movies. That was so not what that part-Veela-chick, Fleur Delacour, looked like.

The most confused we ever get is when we're trying to convince our heads of something our heart knows is a lie.

You is kind. You is smart. You is important.

Ever morning, until you dead in the ground, you gone have to make this decision. You gone have to ask yourself, "Am I gone believe what them fools say about me today?"

I always thought insanity would be a dark, bitter feeling, but it is drenching and delicious if you really roll around in it.

All I'm saying is, kindness don't have no boundaries.

Wasn't that the point of the book? For women to realize, we are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought.

Write about what disturbs you, particularly if it bothers no one else.

Ugly live up on the inside. Ugly be a hurtful, mean person

I always order the banned books from a black market dealer in California, figuring if the State of Mississippi banned them, they must be good.

All my life I'd been told what to believe about politics, coloreds, being a girl. But with Constantine's thumb pressed in my hand, I realized I actually had a choice in what I could believe.

I'd cry, if only I had the time to do it.

Heinrich Heine

Where words leave off, music begins.

Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings.

We should forgive our enemies, but not before they are hanged.

Perfumes are the feelings of flowers.

In dark ages people are best guided by religion, as in a pitch-black night a blind man is the best guide; he knows the roads and paths better than a man who can see. When daylight comes, however, it is foolish to use blind, old men as guides.

Ordinarily he was insane, but he had lucid moments when he was merely stupid.

There are more fools in the world than there are people.

Nature knows no indecencies; man invents them.

Lawrence Durrell

Does not everything depend on our interpretation of the silence around us?

There are only three things to be done with a woman. You can love her, suffer for her, or turn her into literature.

I don’t believe one reads to escape reality. A person reads to confirm a reality he knows is there, but which he has not experienced.

A city becomes a world when one loves one of its inhabitants.

We are all hunting for rational reasons for believing in the absurd.

Who invented the human heart, I wonder? Tell me, and then show me the place where he was hanged.

I am quite alone. I am neither happy nor unhappy; I lie suspended like a hair or a feather in the cloudy mixtures of memory.

There is no pain compared to that of loving a woman who makes her body accessible to one and yet who is incapable of delivering her true self -- because she does not know where to find it.

Sōseki Natsume

I believe that words uttered in passion contain a greater living truth than do those words which express thoughts rationally conceived. It is blood that moves the body. Words are not meant to stir the air only: they are capable of moving greater things.

You seem to be under the impression that there is a special breed of bad humans. There is no such thing as a stereotype bad man in this world. Under normal conditions, everybody is more or less good, or, at least, ordinary. But tempt them, and they may suddenly change. That is what is so frightening about men.

I do not want your admiration now, because I do not want your insults in the future. I bear with my loneliness now, in order to avoid greater loneliness in the years ahead. You see, loneliness is the price we have to pay for being born in this modern age, so full of freedom, independence, and our own egotistical selves.

It is painfully easy to define human beings. They are beings who, for no good reason at all, create their own unnecessary suffering.

Use your intellect to guide you, and you will end up putting people
off. Rely on your emotions, and you will forever be pushed around.
Force your will on others, and you will live in constant tension. There
is no getting around it—people are hard to live with.

Abraham Joshua Heschel

Self-respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.

Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ...get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.

When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.

It is customary to blame secular science and anti-religious philosophy for the eclipse of religion in modern society. It would be more honest to blame religion for its own defeats. Religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion--its message becomes meaningless.

Wonder rather than doubt is the root of all knowledge.

Faith is not the clinging to a shrine but an endless pilgrimage of the heart.

Never once in my life did I ask God for success or wisdom or power or fame. I asked for wonder, and he gave it to me.
