Pablo Picasso II

Everything you can imagine is real.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.

Ah, good taste! What a dreadful thing! Taste is the enemy of creativeness.

Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.

There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun.

When I was a child my mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk, you'll be the pope.' Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.

The chief enemy of creativity is good sense.

Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.

It takes a very long time to become young.

I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.

Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion, it is not the desire to mate every second minute of the day, it is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every cranny of your body.

Women only nag when they feel unappreciated.

Did you know that childhood is the only time in our lives when insanity is not only permitted to us, but expected?

We should care for each other more than we care for ideas, or else we will end up killing each other.

Love is a kind of dementia with very precise and oft-repeated clinical symptoms. You blush in each other's presence, you both hover in places where you expect the other to pass, you are both a little tongue-tied, you both laugh inexplicably and too long, you become quite nauseatingly girlish, and he becomes quite ridiculously gallant. You have also grown a little stupid.

History is the propaganda of the victors.

I know you have not thought about it. Italians always act without thinking, it's the glory and the downfall of your civilisation. A German plans a month in advance what his bowel movements will be at Easter, and the British plan everything in retrospect, so it always looks as though everything occurred as they intended. The French plan everything whilst appearing to be having a party, and the Spanish...well, God knows. Anyway, Pelagia is Greek, that's my point.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel II

Nothing great in the world was accomplished without passion.

We learn from history that we do not learn from history.

To be independent of public opinion is the first formal condition of achieving anything great.

What experience and history teaches us is that people and governments have never learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it.

Genuine tragedies in the world are not conflicts between right and wrong. They are conflicts between two rights.

Only one man ever understood me, and he didn't understand me.

Truth is found neither in the thesis nor the antithesis, but in an emergent synthesis which reconciles the two.

It is solely by risking life that freedom is obtained; . . . the individual who has not staked his or her life may, no doubt, be recognized as a Person; but he or she has not attained the truth of this recognition as an independent self-consciousness.

Education is the art of making man ethical.

When liberty is mentioned, we must always be careful to observe whether it is not really the assertion of private interests which is thereby designated.

People who are too fastidious towards the finite never reach actuality, but linger in abstraction, and their light dies away.

Michelangelo Buonarroti II

If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

Genius is eternal patience.

The greatest artist does not have any concept
Which a single piece of marble does not itself contain
Within its excess, though only
A hand that obeys the intellect can discover it

If I am more alive because love burns and chars me,
as a fire, given wood or wind, feels new elation,
it's that he who lays me low is my salvation,
and invigorates the more, the more he scars me.

It is necessary to keep one's compass in one's eyes and not in the hand, for the hands execute, but the eye judges.

With few words I shall make thee understand my soul.

Read the heart and not the letter for the pen cannot draw near the good intent.

A man paints with his brains and not with his hands.

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.

I'd much rather be a woman than a man. Women can cry, they can wear cute clothes, and they are the first to be rescued off of sinking ships.

There is no real security except for whatever you build inside yourself.

I base most of my fashion taste on what doesn't itch.

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures;
they give unconditional love.
For me they are the role model for being alive.

While we have the gift of life, it seems to me that only tragedy is to allow part of us to die—whether it is our spirit, our creativity, or our glorious uniqueness.

Dreams are like paper, they tear so easily.

I can always be distracted by love, but eventually I get horny for my creativity.

Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.

It's always something.

William W. Purkey

You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth

Human potential, though not always apparent, is there waiting to be discovered and invited forth.

A Student is the most important person ever in this school...in person, on the telephone, or by mail.
A Student is not dependent on us...we are dependent on the Student.
A Student is not an interruption of our work..the Studenti s the purpose of it. We are not doing a favor by serving the Student...the Student is doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so.
A Student is a person who brings us his or her desire to learn. It is our job to handle each Student in a manner which is beneficial to the Student and ourselves.

Bill Hicks

Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the Weather.

They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do just as well — you just realize that it's not worth the fucking effort. There is a difference.

I'm tired of this back-slappin' "isn't humanity neat" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes.

I'm glad mushrooms are against the law, because I took them one time, and you know what happened to me? I laid in a field of green grass for four hours going, "My God! I love everything." Yeah, now if that isn't a hazard to our country … how are we gonna justify arms dealing when we realize that we're all one?

We all pay for life with death, so everything in between should be free.

Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye.

The whole image is that eternal suffering awaits anyone who questions God's infinite love. That's the message we're brought up with, isn't it? Believe or die! Thank you, forgiving Lord, for all those options.

I believe that there is an equality to all humanity. We all suck.

This is where we are at right now, as a whole. No one is left out of the loop. We are experiencing a reality based on a thin veneer of lies and illusions. A world where greed is our God and wisdom is sin, where division is key and unity is fantasy, where the ego-driven cleverness of the mind is praised, rather than the intelligence of the heart.

Matt Groening

Of course I’ve gone mad with power! Have you ever tried going mad without power? It’s boring and no one listens to you!

Love is a snowmobile racing across the tundra and then suddenly it flips over, pinning you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come.

I know all those words, but that sentence makes no sense to me.

To alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems.

You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try.'

Solitude never hurt anyone. Emily Dickinson lived alone, and she wrote some of the most beautiful poetry the world has ever known... then went crazy as a loon.

Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals ... except the weasel.

You can't keep blaming yourself. Just blame yourself once, and move on.

I promise I'll do anything for you, especialy if it's easy.

Never knock on death's door. Ring the doorbell then run. He totally hates that.

That took balls.
Please," I said with a snort, "that took ovaries. Of which I have two.

Maybe I needed sensitivity training. I once signed up for an anger management class, but the instructor pissed me off.

Genius has its limitations.
Insanity...not so much

If I couldn't be a good example, I'd just have to be a horrible warning.

I stop fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.

I may not look like much, but I'm an expert at pretending to be a ninja.

I went down like a drunken cowgirl trying to line dance to Metallica.

After a long pause in which he took the time to blink several times, he asked, "You named your breasts?"
I turned my back to him with a shrug. I named my ovaries, too, but they don't get out as much.

Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

Don't go buying trouble. It's free an it know where you live.

I'd have a longer attention span if there weren't so many shiny things.

Fernando Pessoa

Literature is the most agreeable way of ignoring life.

No intelligent idea can gain general acceptance unless some stupidity is mixed in with it.

There are ships sailing to many ports, but not a single one goes where life is not painful.

My past is everything I failed to be.

I've always rejected being understood. To be understood is to prostitute oneself. I prefer to be taken seriously for what I'm not, remaining humanly unknown, with naturalness and all due respect.

I'd woken up early, and I took a long time getting ready to exist.

We never love anyone. What we love is the idea we have of someone. It's our own concept—our own selves—that we love.

I am nothing.
I'll never be anything.
I couldn't want to be something.
Apart from that, I have in me all the dreams in the world.

The feelings that hurt most, the emotions that sting most, are those that are absurd - The longing for impossible things, precisely because they are impossible; nostalgia for what never was; the desire for what could have been; regret over not being someone else; dissatisfaction with the world’s existence. All these half-tones of the soul’s consciousness create in us a painful landscape, an eternal sunset of what we are.
